Wizards and Clerics Using Spell Focus Items
Spell Focus Items are usually in the form of wands, rings, staves, talismans, necklaces, holy symbol, or whatever form is approved by the Dungeon Master, that a Wizard or Cleric casts all of his or her spells through for greater effect. Should the item not be available at the time of casting, the caster’s spells are weakened. Such items for Clerics are almost always in the form of a Holy Symbol, but may sometimes be Relics.
The typical effects of casting through a focus item are the following:
-The spell cast through the focus casts at 1 level higher.
-Saves vs. the spell cast through the focus is at -2
-Holy Symbols as focus items Turn or Rebuke Undead at 1 level higher.
If the focus item is not used:
-The spell cast through the focus casts at 1 level lower.
-Saves vs. the spell cast through the focus is at +2
-Holy Symbols as focus items Turn or Rebuke Undead at 1 level lower.
Such focus items may be owned at 1st level, and may have minor enchantments which might allow a wand to turn into a staff, or vise versa; or a ring may be stretched to wear as a circlet, belt, or collar/choker.
If the focus item is lost or destroyed, the caster must either create a new one; attune to another item; or un-attune from using any other focus items. The process of attunement (or unattuning) takes approximately a month: usually starting on a full moon and completed on a full moon. The cost for attunement (or unattunement) is 300gp. To create a completely new focus item, the caster must have the ability to make magical devices appropriate for the design of the focus item. The caster does not have to make the item himself, and may use an appropriate preexisting magical device, if he wishes.
If the focus item is destroyed, the owner take 1d4 times HALF his level in damage. The owner may choose to destroy the item as a retributive strike, in which case the damage is 1d6 times his level to all (including the owner) within a 10’ radius; no save for the owner; but a reflex DC of 10+owner’s casting level+owner’s Charisma Modifier for half damage. This damage is in addition to the 1d4 times half owner’s level. This is usually a last resort against an enemy that will likely cost the life of the owner. The item must be in the hands of the caster to perform the retributive strike.
